Practical Advice
Carry some cash in euros (Bulgaria has used the euro since January 2026). You will need it to pay for the Boyana entry (about €5), the Rila museum (about €4), and snacks like the famous local mekitsi. Some smaller vendors near the monastery do not accept cards.
Dress appropriately. The Orthodox Church strictly enforces a modest dress code at Rila. Both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees. Bring a scarf or light jacket, which also helps with the cooler mountain air.
